How to use the ACT score calculator
- Choose the test you took. Pick Enhanced ACT for the shorter, newer test in use since 2025. For an older printed practice test, choose Legacy ACT.
- Type your number of right answers for English, Math and Reading. Science is up to you: add it only if you took that section.
- As you type, each section gets its own score from 1 to 36, and you also see your composite and percentile, which shows how you compare with other students. The calculator does all the math for you.
How ACT scores are calculated
It all starts with a simple count. A section's raw score is simply how many questions you got right in it. Wrong or blank answers don't take any points away. Next, ACT changes that count into a 1 to 36 score, which is called your scaled score. It does this with a chart: find your number of right answers, and your score is right next to it. For the newer test, this enhanced ACT score calculator follows ACT's own chart. ACT released that chart along with its free Enhanced ACT practice test.
The composite is your overall ACT score. Your section scores get averaged and then rounded to the nearest whole number: a half or more goes up, less goes down.
Enhanced ACT (2025 and later)
On this test, your composite is the average of English, Math and Reading. Science is optional and doesn't change your composite. If you choose to take it, it gives you a Science score as well as a STEM score that averages Math and Science. STEM means science, technology, engineering and math. A few questions in every section are only there to test new questions and don't count.
View the formula
Composite = (English + Math + Reading) ÷ 3.
| Section | Questions | Scored |
|---|---|---|
| English | 50 | 40 |
| Math | 45 | 41 |
| Reading | 36 | 27 |
| Science | 40 | 34 |
Legacy ACT (before 2025)
The older test averaged all four sections, Science included, to get the composite. Every question counted: 75 English, 60 Math, 40 Reading and 40 Science. Paper tests kept this format until September 2025.

These scores are ACT's own, from its 2025 online practice test. Find your right answers in the left column of this ACT scores chart, then look across for each section's score from 1 to 36. An empty box means that section doesn't have that many questions.

Legacy ACT conversion table (Form 2176CPRE)
This is the chart for the older ACT, from ACT's 2024–2025 practice booklet. Its code, Form 2176CPRE, is just a label for that practice test. This chart works the other way round from the one above: pick a score from 1 to 36 on the left, then read along the row for the number of right answers needed. An empty box means that score can't be earned in that section.

Frequently asked questions
How is the ACT composite score calculated?
Start by adding your English, Math and Reading scores, then divide the total by 3 and round it to the nearest whole number. Say you got 24, 30 and 25: together that makes 79. Dividing that by 3 gives 26.33, so the composite is 26. Science also counted before 2025, and then the total got divided by 4. The calculator takes care of this for you.
Does the ACT round up?
Yes, when the average reaches a half or more. ACT rounds it to the nearest whole number. So with three sections, 26.33 is rounded down to 26 and 26.67 is rounded up to 27.
Does Science count toward the ACT composite?
Not on the newer Enhanced ACT. It began online in April 2025, and since September 2025 everyone has taken this test. Science is optional on it, with its own score from 1 to 36. ACT also averages it with your Math score to give you a STEM score. With the old Legacy ACT, Science counted as one of four scores in the composite.
Why does the calculator stop at 40 English, 41 Math, 27 Reading and 34 Science?
Every Enhanced ACT section has a few new questions that ACT is testing, which don't count: 10 English, 4 Math, 9 Reading and 6 Science. Only the questions that count go into your raw score, and ACT's chart works the same way. Your practice test's answer key tells you which questions don't count.
How accurate is this ACT score calculator?
Our ACT test score calculator scores the newer test with the chart ACT released for its official online practice test. For older tests, it uses the chart printed in ACT's 2024–2025 practice booklet. Real tests each have their own slightly different chart, so your actual section score may come out about a point higher or lower.
What is a raw score on the ACT?
It's how many questions you got right in one section, leaving out the ones that don't count. A wrong answer doesn't take anything away.
How is an ACT superscore calculated?
A superscore is built from your top score in each section, even when those came from different times you took the test. To get it, ACT takes your top English, Math and Reading scores, adds them, then divides by 3 and rounds the result to a whole number. This page also works as an ACT superscore calculator: enter each section's right answers from the test where you did best in that section.
